1. Planespotting
  2. Heavy Iron

Jan 25th, SFO 8:30-9:30 am

SFO is a great airport for plane-watching. Not so great, for plane-photography! This was my first attempt at "heavy iron" or commercial aircraft spotting and the conditions were tough: heavy haze, extremely windy and cold, and the need to push my 500mm lens to the limits. There just isn't a good close spot (at least that I know of that's legal) for this airport. That said, the action is fast -- at one point I had 13 airliners in front of me. SFO can land/takeoff two birds at time so one can be coming in as one is leaving with several taxiing in front of you. I shot from the park by the Marriott on Shoreline drive. The haze may have cleared up as day wore on... who knows. Buy heck, if you get bored/frustrated with trying to capture the metal birds you can always switch to the "real deals" as there is a ton of bird life around the area.
